Great Falls
"I saw the spray rise above the plain like a collumn of smoke:"
Excerpt from the journal of Captain Meriweather Lewis after viewing the Great Falls, June 13 1805

The Great Falls are located in Montana. I first saw them shortly after 9/11. The water volume was very low and helicopters circled the dam. Two years later when I saw them the water volume was high. There were no helicopters, only tourists. This painting is one where I used journal notes, sketches, photos and plenty of artistic liscense to try and capture the beauty and power Captain Lewis so eloquently described in his journal entry on June 13, 1805.

Beaverhead Rock is so distinctive that even though my knowledge of it was only from the Corps of Discovery journals I recognized it immediately.
